"The chapter on “pigeon people” — you know the type [...] is priceless. Here, pigeon advocates meeting in South Brooklyn debate the morality of feeding the birds: “They’ve got two babies coming every four weeks,” a proponent of birth control shouts. “There’s too many babies for them to feed, and it keeps them in poverty, a cycle of poverty!” A pigeon hotline nearly falls apart when Al, a responder, decides to take calls about other birds. “Al, the power’s gone to your head,” a rehabber scolds him. As “compassion turns to paranoia” and “nobility turns to self-righteousness,” one woman rebukes another in a Listserv exchange: “Don’t poop on me from your high perch.” Humphries admires the pigeon activists, who “argue for a sense of responsibility toward our environment that runs deeper than the latest popular cause, and that perspective is worth considering.” But ultimately, she says, “it’s difficult to get behind saving an animal that is one of the least endangered birds on the planet.”
